Until 1999, Network Solutions had an exclusive contract with the goverment to operate the InterNIC, which processed registration requests for certain top-level domains such ".com", ".net", and ".org" domain names. All other companies which provided domain name registration services had to go through the NSI InterNIC. Now there are many companies that have been accredited by either ICANN or CORE which can register domain names diretly, without going through another company.
Choose a Registrar
Since it is better to choose a registrar yourself, rather than letting your ISP or web hosting provider make the choice, you need some way to find out about the active registrars. On the ICANN and CORE web sites, you can find the list of registrars that each organization has accredited as registrars. Or at NewRegistrars.com you can peruse a directory that lists both ICANN and CORE registrars.
Register A Domain Name For Less
You can register a domain name for $10 less than the traditional InterNIC fees, with no additional fee for the registration service, and no separate Network Solutions billing.
Beware of "Free" Registration
Some web sites advertise "free" domain name registration. Because they are not accredited registrars, they cannot register domain names directly; they must submit your registration request to one of the registrars for processing. What the "free" registration means is that they do not charge for subitting your domain name registration request to a registrar. Instead of paying them to register a domain name and then getting a separate bill from the registrar, you pay one amount, part of which is the charge for the domain name and part that is a referral fee returned to the web site where you registered. With this arrangement, you could be paying as much as $70 or more for a domain name. You would be better off going directly to one of the New Registrars
