| Getting a Domain Name for Your Web Site |
|
| Here are some things you should do when you want to get a domain name for your web site: |
- Find a Domain Name
- One of the first things you need to do prior to setting up a web site, is to get a good domain name for it. If the name of your business is unusual, there is a possibility that the name has not already been registered by someone else. You can use a "WhoIs" query to find out whether or not a specific name has already been taken.
More likely, it will take a little more effort to find an available domain name. See the primer on Finding a Domain Name for some help.
|
- Register a Domain Name
- Once you have found a good domain name for your web site, you should reserve the name immediately, even if you do not plan to use it right away. It is not a good idea to tell anyone what name you have chosen, until you have succesfully registered it.
When you are ready to reserve a domain name, you could register it through Network Solutions, your ISP, or a web hosting provider, but if you do you will probably end up paying $70 for the domain name, and maybe even an additional $49 for submitting the registration. You can probably get it cheaper by choosing a registrar yourself.
